NB-IoT: What are the benefits?

NB-IoT introduces a cost-effective and power-efficient way to deploy large numbers of connected devices. It is optimized for a new generation of battery-operated IoT products that are located in hard-to-reach areas and only need to send small amounts of data periodically.

Excellent range and penetration

With a maximum theoretical link budget of 164 dB, NB-IoT brings the best range as well as indoor and underground coverage among all cellular technologies.
NB-IoT cost

Low cost

Less complex radio signal processing simplifies chipset design and reduces module costs to as low as 20% of the LTE module price.
NB-IoT power

Low power

Power Saving Mode (PSM) and Extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX) features drastically reduce energy usage and enable longer battery life.

What to know about today’s NB-IoT coverage worldwide?

While NB-IoT brings distinct benefits for low-bandwidth IoT applications, it is equally important to understand the current technology state and maturity for an informed connectivity decision.

Technology availability

NB-IoT standardization was completed in 2016, and yet technology roll-out has been slow. So far, less than one-third of all countries have had NB-IoT deployed.

Global roaming

As of today, NB-IoT roaming is relatively limited, and few network providers have offered multi-network NB-IoT access for global IoT deployments. One reason is that operators are currently transitioning from a pure volume-based intercarrier billing model to one that also incorporates base pricing per device.

PSM and eDRX availability

PSM and eDRX are two important features to deliver the best power-saving capability in cellular LPWAN. Therefore, it's recommended to ensure they are supported with NB-IoT network services when the low-power requirement prevails.

Coverage status definition:

  • Validated: NB-IoT coverage is frequently tested and confirmed for this network.
  • Guaranteed: NB-IoT service is guaranteed with dedicated roaming agreements.

All coverage data is provided for informational purposes only and are subjected to change. Actual service coverage, quality, and availability may vary based on factors such as network partners' technology roll-out, SIM version, weather, interference, topography, and device model.

Module selection

As NB-IoT has not been deployed on a global scale yet, we recommend using cellular LPWAN modules that support not only NB-IoT but come with a fallback to common RAT types. Contact one of our experts to help you with your module selection.

NB-IoT frequency bands

NB-IoT frequency bands

While there are 26 frequency bands available for NB-IoT operations, only a subset of these bands is widely used by network operators. By knowing the most used NB-IoT bands per region, you can simplify antenna design while reducing device certification costs.
